The Valais region of Switzerland has more 4000m peaks than any other part of the Alps. with great a great hut network and routes at all difficulty there are mountains for everyone from those climbing there first 4000m peak to experienced alpinists looking to summit the Weisshorn and some of the more difficult 4000ers.
The valleys that have the highest concentration are Saastal (Saas Fee, Saas Grund) and Mattertaal which runs up to Zermatt and the Matterhorn both give access to some classic peaks. Saas is a perfect base for those developing their alpine skills on the 400m peaks, the Allalinhorn, Lagginhorn and Weissmies are all accessible for those with solid crampon technique. Those who are ready for some more technical objectives the Traverse of the Breithorn is one of the best day routes in the Alps and can be cobined with Pollox with a night in the Ayas hut, peaks like the Zinal Rothorn are what Alpine dreams are made of. If you want a good physical challenge then an ascent of the Dom the highest mountain completely in Switzerland is a fantastic high mountain experience.
