Japan Tohuku Back Country

Ski Japan North Tohuku, 2019 13 Jan – 25 Jan 2017 £3450 This trip is now full please check out our other Japan trip to Shiritoko

Japan is an incredible place to ski. A once in a lifetime destination that becomes a annual powder addiction. After an incredible trip to North Tohuku in 2017 we have decided to return this year and add a couple of extra days skiing to make the most of this truly specical area. Tohuku is located at the North End of the Japans main island Honshu, just across the Tsugaru straits from Hokkaido. Westerners seldom visit this area, in 2017 we were only the second western guided group to visit the area, we were impressed with the lack of skiers compared to Hokkaido and Hakkuba.

The program proposed by our Japanese partners is outlined below. We plan to stay in 4 different locations sampling a variety of different ski possibilities, we have the option to use 3 different ski lifts to access off piste itineraries. The rest of the trip will be  human powered skiing ascents are usually about 1000-1200m per day split into a number of laps. Don’t worry if this sounds a lot by alpine standards as we are skiing at close to sea level so you will feel super human.

We will be staying in very traditional Japanese Onsen, sleeping on futons and sampling amazing Japanese food. All our accommodation have hot baths (Onsen). Have a look at the links in the program to check out the accommodation – skiing this part of Japan is as much about sampling traditional Japanese culture as it as sampling their cold smoke powder.

We are always asked what ski kit to take on any trip to Japan. These trips are true back country adventures so we recommend skis with a minimum of 100mm under foot with touring bindings and skins. We are skiing on Dynastar Legend 106 skis which works for everything and can even cope with the hard windblown snow that is often found on the summits of some of the volcano’s we hope to ski. If you need any more information about this very special adventure then get in touch.
